This work is part of my Exodus series. In the early 1900s my great grandparents fled Lithuania with their young children. They were lucky and found asylum. Generations later, I live in a country I didn’t grown up in and grew up in a country my parents immigrated to. Over a century later, the story continues. Many millions of people, less fortunate than my grandparents, are currently in flight all over the world, with the refugee situation exacerbated by the current pandemic.
The human exodus has been with us for millennia and continues into the present day. To reflect this, I worked with a mix of traditional and modern materials and techniques. Smalti, hand cut marble, cleaved with the same tools used by the Romans and Greeks is used in conjunction with modern materials such as wire and plastic. This particular work was inspired by images of clothes and other items floating on water. In this work I explore the idea of a safe refuge, taking patterns from textiles with their connotations of warmth and comfort and images of water and land on the painted background.
